2016 NCTSPM Student of the Year Award Winner: Emily Black

NCTSPM is proud to announce that Emily Black, a graduate student at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has been selected as the 2016 NCTSPM Student of the Year.

Each year at the Transportation Research Board's Annual Meeting, the U.S. Department of Transportaiton honors one outstanding student representative from each of its University Transportation Centers. These Students of the Year represent the best of the nation's young transportation profesionals, and they are honored for both their current achievements and the promise they hold for future contributions to be made to the field.

Emily Black completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 2012 at the University of Alabama and is currently a graduate student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  Emily interned at Alabama Power Company in 2011 in the Transmission Line Services department assisting the GIS team.  In 2013, she was hired at Alabama Power Company and is now the LiDAR specialist for the transmission system in Alabama.     

Emily's research at UAB focused on Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) and high strength materials (high strength steel, ultra-high performance concrete, and fiber reinforced polymers). Her thesis was titled "Innovative Modular High Performance Lightweight Decks for Accelerated Bridge Construction" and focused on researching potential bridge deck systems using high strength materials that can be implemented using accelerated bridge construction techniques to help meet the growing demand for rapid bridge rehabilitation and reconstruction across the United States.
